Interview met Ami Vitale



Het dagblad News&Observer publiceert vandaag een interview met fotojournaliste Ami Vitale, een grote naam die regelmatige bezoekers van deze website vast bekend voorkomt.

Ami Vitale, die na een vijfjarig verblijf in India en een korte tussenstop in Barcelona binnenkort terugverhuist naar de Verenigde Staten, vertelt in het gesprek onder meer hoe de aanwezigheid van fotografen en cameraploegen in sommige situaties het geweld in conflictgebieden aanjaagt:

Those pictures you get from the scary close calls are so dramatic and sensational, and I don't think that they do a lot in conveying the things that I think need to be conveyed. It just makes people feel like the world is this horrible scary place, and these people are all very black and white. That's just one piece of it. It's not the main piece. I think I learned that when I parachuted myself into Palestine and Israel during the Intifada. Kids were throwing rocks for the benefit of the cameramen. And the cameramen were shooting these dramatic pictures, and then things were escalating in front of me. It made me question the whole thing. In some ways, we're part of the story. We're creating a lot of things. Sometimes. Not always, but it does happen.
